Hong Kong media and community published editorials and articles Thursday, pointing out that ChenShui-bian's "Taiwan independence" claim has menaced interests of people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits.

In an editorial, Hong Kong Commercial Daily said more and more people in Taiwan have come to know and understand the mainland, with increasing exchanges across the Taiwan Straits.

The number of the Taiwan people who are in favor of the "one country, two systems" and peaceful reunification have been going up dramatically and the Taiwan economy has become more and more relied on the mainland, it added.

Under such circumstances, a handful of people who cling to "Taiwan independence" have become more crazy and unconscious, the newspaper said, noting that they would try every means to instigate people in Taiwan to confront with people in the mainland, and set obstacle to the peaceful reunification of China.

In Ta Kung Pao, a political and economic study society of Hong Kong pointed out in an article that there is only one China in theworld and that the mainland and Taiwan belong to one China.

The Taiwan Straits could by no means serve a water threshold that separate the cultural links of the Chinese nation and split the country, it said.

The article said that the so-called "Each side is a country" could never be accepted by the Chinese people both at home and overseas, and that Taiwan is part of Chinese territory for ever, and that the Chinese sovereignty and territorial integrity are notallowed to split.

Some overseas Chinese residing in Hong Kong also published their comments in Wen Wei Po and pointed out that Chen Shui-bian'sclaim of "Each side is a country" and "referendum" shows his lack of history knowledge.

Taiwan does not only belong to the 23 million Taiwan compatriots, but also to the 1.3 billion Chinese people, and both sides of the Straits belong to an integrated country, which is notallowed to separate, they said in an article.

The article warned that Chen Shui-bian must draw lessons from history, and that there is no way to split the country.
