Iran to Host First International Robot Deminer Contest
The first international mine detecting robot contest will be held at Amir Kabir University of Iran from Aug. 19 to 21, the official Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported on Wednesday.

The contest, called "Robot Deminer 2002" under the motto of "peace and tranquility in the world," will be attended by some 120 Iranian and foreign teams, as well as 1,500 experts, researchers and international instructors.
The contest is aimed at creating harmony between peace and humanitarian processes with today's technology, the report said.
"A large number of mines have been laid across the nation claiming many lives annually, so the application of the robot deminer contest is of special significance," the secretariat of thecontest said.
The contest is jointly sponsored by the United Nations, the International Center for Dialogue among Civilizations and the Iranian government.
Iran ranks second among the countries in terms of undetected mines.
