As indicated recently in the research report "Sci-tech Creation and Made in China" published by the Great Wall Strategic Research Institution for Enterprises, a panoramic scanning over the "Made-in-China" trades has been made in the country.

The report points out that China has become the fourth big production and manufacturing country in the world. Up to now, the output of over 100 varieties of manufactured goods has turned out to be at the "top of the world". "Made in China" has been on the rise in the world market.

The hundred and more varieties of products include more than 10 trade fields of manufacturing industry for household appliance, equipment for communications, textiles, medicine and pharmaceutical industry, mechanical devices and chemical industry and so on.

Of the household appliance, 2001 saw 39.36 million Color TV sets turned out, accounting for 29 percent of the world quota, 14.43 million of washing machines, a rate of 24 percent, 12.79 million refrigerators, 16 percent of the world total, 18.27 air-conditioners, a ratio of 30 percent.

Annual output of electric fan and camera reached a respective 76.61 and 55.14 millions, both over 50 percent of the world total.

As regards the manufacture of electronic and communication devices, it saw an annual production of 95.98 phone sets, taking up 50 percent of the world scale, an annual outturn of 45.90 displays, occupying 42 percent of the world total with clock and watch coming to some 150,000 sets, 75 percent of the world quota.

The silk-weaving represented the textile industry in China and it saw an annual output of 7.33 tons, an occupation rate of 70 percent in the world.

In the medical industry, the production of penicillin and Terramycin came to a respective 60 and 65 percent of the world with Vitamin C on the weak side only, a proportion of 50 percent.

Of the mechanical equipment, tractors and containers manufactured in China came to over 83 percent of the world, the two products taking up the highest proportion of the world manufacturing industry.

Through an accumulation of over 20 years in the past, we can come to a conclusion that China's manufacturing industry is now on the rise, presenting people a joyful surprise. This comes not only from a stable macro-economic environment, improvement of market mechanism and development of national industry but also from the connections brought about by the transnational corporations that are moving into China at a breathtaking speed and scale.

Starting from 1990 onwards, the Chinese mainland has received an investment of RMB 230 billion-yuan, taking up about 45 percent of the total investment in Asia.

The past few years have witnessed the Microsoft, Motorola, Samson and GE the world famous corporations establish more than 100 research and development centers and even more production bases in China.

China owns for itself a large consuming market with relatively low labor cost. At the same time it has a stronger competence for flexible production and a whole set of perfect industry equipment. All this is the fertile soil in which manufacturing industry can realize a speedy development. Nevertheless, we must not neglect its weak points.

Among those "Made in China" products brand names originated from China are in the few. Higher cost for goods circulation and decentralized management of enterprises for goods circulation prove to be an impediment to the development in Chinese manufacturing industry.

Aside from these, fragile infrastructure and unreasonable configuration of human resources have affected the development of manufacturing industry to some extent. Should China want to become a giant in the world manufacturing industry it is necessary to find out a development strategy of its own.
