Morocco-China friendship will continue to forge ahead in spite of changes in the international situation, Moroccan Ambassador to China Mimoun Mehdi said Thursday.

In an interview with Xinhua before Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji's forthcoming visit to Morocco, Mehdi spoke highly of Morocco-China cooperation over 40-plus years of full diplomatic ties between the two countries.

He hoped that the two countries will join their efforts to safeguard interests of the developing countries and the world peace as well.

Mehdi said: "The long history of Morocco-China friendship has transcended the geographical distance between us," adding that bilateral relations have witnessed a rapid growth since the two countries established diplomatic ties more than 40 years ago.

"I am proud that I have taken part in all activities related tohigh-level visits between leaders of the two countries during my four-year stay in China," he said.

Mehdi, who is going to leave his post next month, mentioned many high-level visits between Morocco and China. For example, Moroccan Prime Minister Abderrahmane Youssoufi visited China in 1998 and Chinese President Jiang Zemin paid a state visit to Morocco in 1999.

Moreover, he said, Moroccan king Mohammed VI visited China thisyear, and next week the Chinese premier will pay an official visit to Morocco.

These frequent high-level visits fully show that the friendship cultivated by the two peoples has grown rapidly, the ambassador said.

He noted that the two countries have not only maintained close political relations, but also enhanced cooperation in various fields, such as economy, culture and sanitation.

Mehdi said more Chinese companies are welcome to invest in Morocco and more Chinese tourists to travel to Morocco.

He said it is his hope that Morocco will be listed as a tourist destination for Chinese citizens so as to promote the joint development of the two countries' tourism.
