Visiting Chinese Premier Zhu Rongjion Monday hailed a time-honored friendship between China and Algeria, pledging to further promote economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.

During talks with his Algerian counterpart Ali Benflis, Zhu said Sino-Algerian friendship and cooperation have been based on mutual understanding and mutual trust.

He said China will never forget Algeria's important contributions to the restoration of the legal seat of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations, and is also grateful for Algeria's firm support for China on the issues of Taiwan and human rights.

Moreover, the two countries have reached consensus on profound international issues, he said, adding they have supported and coordinated with each other in the international arena, thus making unremitting efforts to help safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of their own and a large number of developing countries as a whole, as well as push ahead with the establishment of a just and reasonable new international order politically and economically.

Zhu said Chinese President Jiang Zemin visited Algeria in 1999, and Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika paid a reciprocal visit to China in 2000, adding the two visits have defined the direction of the growth of bilateral ties in the new century.

"The purpose of my visit to Algeria is to work with you to implement consensus reached by the heads of state of our two countries and further promote the development of Sino-Algerian friendship and cooperation," Zhu told Benflis.

On bilateral economic and trade ties, Zhu said bilateral economic and trade cooperation has been fruitful over the past several decades, adding that China has been adopting a positive attitude toward expanding the areas of cooperation to raise such cooperation to a new high.

He said he was pleased to see that some noted Chinese enterprises have come to Algeria to seek cooperation with their Algerian counterparts, which he termed as "noticeable results" of joint efforts to encourage enterprises of the two countries to engage in immediate exchanges.

Such cooperation between enterprises of the two countries has enriched the content of bilateral economic and trade cooperation of mutual benefit, and also enjoys promising prospects, he said.

Later in the day, Zhu also met with Bouteflika on bilateral ties and matters of mutual interest.

Bouteflika is expected to hold a banquet in honor of Zhu Monday evening.

Zhu arrived here Sunday afternoon for a three-day official visit to Algeria, the first leg of Zhu's four-nation visit to Africa, which will also take him to Morocco, Cameroon and South Africa.

In South Africa, Zhu will attend the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development on Sept. 2-4.
