Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said Monday at the United Nations that China will, together with the international community, continue to strive for the political settlement of the Iraqi issue within the framework of the United Nations.

Tang, who is here to attend the 57th General Assembly session, made the statement in an interview with Xinhua after Iraq announced its decision to accept unconditionally the return of UN arms inspectors.

The Iraqi decision is what the international community, including China, has always hoped to see, he added.

The decision was contained in a letter from the Iraqi government to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, and the letter was then transferred to the UN Security Council.
