An office compound of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, was hit by rocket fire, a UN spokesman said at the UN Headquarters in New York Tuesday.

UN spokesman Fred Eckhard told reporters that a local guard was injured and the building and vehicles suffered damage from the attack by two rockets Tuesday morning at around 4 am local time.

"UNICEF said that at this stage it was not clear why UNICEF washit, and it had no reason why it became a target for terrorist attack," Eckhard said.

At the same time, the UN agency said such incidents underlined the continued volatile security situation facing all humanitarian agencies operating in the country.
