One third of Muslims in northwest China's Tongxin county are benefiting from a brisk trade in sheep and related products.

The Muslim population, totaling eight million in China, is officially known as Hui ethnic group, including about 1.89 million in Ningxia Autonomous Region, or about one third of the region's population.

Wang Youcai, head of the county, said about 40 percent of the population in the farming area had climbed out of poverty, thanks to the deregulation of the trade since China introduced the reform and opening up policy in 1978.

Wang said over 10,000 Muslim farmers-turned-businessmen in the county are engaged in the cashmere industry with their volume reaching 5,000 tons, about two third of the country's total.

The Laoheqiao Mutton and Beef Market in Lingwu city in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region attracted tens of thousands of dealers from 13 provincial areas across China and now has expanded its trade to more than 40 cities in the country.

Its annual business involves 350,000 head of sheep and 30,000 cattle, making it the biggest trading center of mutton and beef in the northwest China.

About 42,000 farmer-brokers in the region generated sales of 3.5 billion yuan (400 million US dollars) in farm produce last year.
