More strenuous security measures taken in the third quarter have helped ensure production safety across the country, said Li Rongrong, minister in charge of the State Economic and Trade Commission, Wednesday.

During Wednesday's national teleconference on industrial safety, the minister said over all the number of major accidents resulting in death-tolls of more than 30 had fallen 53.9 percent, year-on-year in the last eight months.

During the same period, the coal mine sector, recognized as China's most lethal in terms of industrial accidents, registered a39 percent drop in casualties, Li said, adding that no major accidents had occurred on roads or waterways.

However, 4.6 percent more people were killed in road accidents in the first seven months than in the corresponding period of the previous year, as the number of autos on the roads increased by 14percent, Li said.

The minister said that Tianjin, Hainan, Ningxia, Shanghai, Beijing, Jiangsu and Fujian were among the regions that reported marked progress in promoting industrial safety.

Safety check
A new round of nationwide spot checks will soon be conducted to combat workplace accidents. Particular attention would be given to small mines and factories and the dangerous-chemical industry.

Administration director Wang Xianzheng said that workplace safety still looms large as a serious challenge given that more than 75,000 people lost their lives in over 631,000 workplace accidents.

Li Rongrong, minister of the State Economic and Trade Commission, said the workplace-safety situation is gradually changing for the better especially after the State Council sent out special supervisory panels in July this year.

During the first eight months of this year, the number of serious accidents involving the deaths of 30 people or more declined year on year and the overall death toll from such accidents was also lower.

The number of accidents as a whole in the first eight months rose by 9 percent year on year, compared with a growth rate of 20.7 percent the year before.

The death toll rose 4.5 percent, compared with a year-on-year growth rate of 10.4 percent in the first eight months of last year.
