Hurricane Isidore's battering of southeastern Mexico has left at least eight people dead and 150 missing, with 300,000 homeless, according to the official estimates released on Wednesday.

Authorities said the most affected state was Yucatan where fourpeople died and 150 fishermen are reported missing. In Yucatan 90percent of the trees were unrooted and the power system was seriously damaged. Some 97 percent of the residents in Merida, theYucatan state capital, are still without power.

Two others died in the southern state of Chiapas, one in Campache state and one in the state of Quintana Roo.

The authorities estimate a 260 million US dollars loss in agriculture, ranching, fishing and poultry farming.

State authorities in Yucatan, Campeche and Quintana Roo have declared a state of "epidemic alert" to prevent infections and diseases, such as dengue fever, cholera and gastroenteritis.

President Vicente Fox also ordered the creation of a National Coordination for Disaster Victim Assistance, headed by the Social Development Ministry.

The Defense Ministry has distributed relief aid to victims withhelicopters.

Mexico's state-run oil company has asked 5,000 evacuated workers to return to work. More than 8,000 workers were evacuatedfrom platforms as a precaution before Isidore's landfall on Sunday.

With many oil ports in the Gulf of Mexico still closed, the company's oil production per day can only reach 700,000 barrels, half of the normal 1.4 million barrels.

Isidore slammed Cuba late last week before it approached Mexicoon Saturday. Isidore was downgraded to a tropical storm early on Tuesday, and headed northwestward on Wednesday for US shores.
