The People's Daily, China's leading newspaper, is to publish an editorial Tuesday celebrating the 53rd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC).
China's economy has continued to grow rapidly and its 1.2 billion people are making progress on the socialist path with Chinese characteristics, according to the editorial headlined "Making the Motherland Even Better".
The great achievements prove that the third-generation leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee with Jiang Zemin at the core has upheld Deng Xiaoping Theory, followed the basic line and policy of the Party and led the Chinese people to achievements in building a modern China, safeguarding the nation's unity, maintaining world peace and promoting common development worldwide, the editorial says.
About a dozen years ago, Deng Xiaoping predicted that China would have great opportunities in the 21st century. Now China has fulfilled the first and second strategic goals in its modernization drive and has entered a new stage in socialist modernization.
The 16th CPC National Congress is the first of its kind in the new century. The Congress will uphold Deng Xiaoping Theory, implement the "Three Represents" and summarize the work over the last five years. It will have a far-reaching impact on the nation's struggle to fulfill the third strategic goal of socialist modernization, the editorial says.
In the first two decades of this century, China must grasp important opportunities to achieve new success, the editorial notes.
The editorial then calls on the Chinese people to unite closely around the CPC Central Committee with Jiang Zemin at the core, uphold Deng Xiaoping Theory and fully implement the "Three Represents", and make great efforts to build China into a rich, democratic and culturally advanced socialist country.
