Premier Zhu Rongji Monday lauded the progress China has made on the eve of the 53rd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Speaking at a banquet attended by some 1,500 guests from home and abroad, Zhu said that China has attained "remarkable achievements in all areas'' this year.

The premier said that since the People's Republic of China was founded 53 years ago, the Chinese people of all ethnic groups, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, have worked as one and achieved splendid successes.

He added that overseas Chinese and compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan have expressed and extended their constant support and assistance to China's reform and modernization drive.

Zhu noted that China's national economy has maintained a good momentum of growth and progress has been made in readjusting the economic fabric, as well as the economic restructuring.

Among the other areas of progress Zhu highlighted Monday were the improved social security system, enhanced re-employment endeavours, efforts to regulate market order and the implementation of the strategies of revitalizing China through science and technology, as well as of sustainable development.

China has also expanded its opening-up programme in the first year following its entry into the World Trade Organization and witnessed an increase in trade and the amount of foreign investment utilized, according to Zhu.

The premier also said that China has seen vigorous progress in the implementation of its strategy to revitalize the nation through science and education as well as in its sustainable development program.

He remarked that the 16th CPC National Congress scheduled for November will be the first of its kind in the new century, and will lead the Chinese people toward more steadfast strides into the future.

Zhu Rongji reaffirmed that the Central Government will give its utmost support to both the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions in implementing basic law. He also noted that it's the common aspiration of all Chinese people to resolve the Taiwan issue as soon as possible.

Reaffirming the efforts for peaceful re-unification, Zhu labelled the Taiwan authorities' separatist remarks concerning "Taiwan independence'' as "blatant acts of provocation against the one-China principle.'' "All attempts to separate the country are doomed to failure,'' said the premier.

"We are convinced that with the concerted efforts of all the sons and daughters of the Chinese nation, the complete national re-unification will surely become a reality at an early date,'' Zhu added.

As for foreign policy, Premier Zhu Rongji said that China would continue developing its relations with nations around the world. He stressed that China stands against any kind of terrorism. Zhu Rongji added that China, along with other nations, has been striving to establish a new global political and economic order.
