The US military confirmed that US and British warplanes attacked an Iraqi air defense system in northern Iraq on Wednesday.

The targets include a SA-3 missile system and its radar located northwest of Iraqi city Mosul.

"A surface-to-air missile moved. We detected it. It posed a threat and we responded," a spokesman for the US European Command was quoted as saying.

US defense sources said three coalition aircraft used precision-guided munitions in the attack.

Most of the US and British air strikes took place in southern Iraq. The fresh attack is the first of its kind since August 27 when allied warplanes raided an Iraqi air defense radar in the North.
