Women's Top Seed Zhou Mi Advances into Second Round in Badminton

World number two women's shuttler Zhou Mi of China advanced into the second round of the women's singles at the 14th Asian Games badminton tournament Thursday.

World number two women's shuttler Zhou Mi of China advanced into the second round of the women's singles at the 14th Asian Games badminton tournament Thursday.

Zhou took only 13 minutes to dispatch of Syrian Eva Katriv in the first round match, 11-2, 11-1.

While in the men's side, reigning world men's champion Hendrawan of Indonesia took 30 minutes to brush aside Indian Abhinn Shyam Gupta 15-5, 15-5.

In the second round, Hendrawan, gold medalist at the world championships in Seville last year, will face Ronald Susilo of Singapore, who was ranked 12 in the world rankings.

The winner of that match is likely to face top seed Xia Xuanze of China for a place in the semi-finals.

Xia, the world number five, earned a first round bye and will face an unknown player in the second round in Sing Tee Fac of EastTimor, who are making their Asiad debut after gaining independencefour months ago.

World number 14 Taufik Hidayat is in the other half of the men's singles draw. Hidayat, who was given a first round bye, will face Ng Wei of Hong Kong, China in the second round. Ng beat Hidetaka Yamada of Japan in an opening round match 15-11, 15-7.
