For the first time in Asian Games history, individual kumite and kata for both men and women were held in karatedo competition, with nine golds in kumite rivalries and two in kata.

In a kumite bout, the objective is outfighting and outclassing the opponent, since style counts in every match. The action is limited to three minutes for men and two minutes for women.

The kata competition is oriented around a series of karatedo moves strung together in a traditional sequence.
