Chinese Trade Minister: China, Mexico Intensify Economic Ties

China and Mexico should intensify their cooperation in further improvement of economic ties and trade so as to achieve common prosperity, Shi Guangsheng, Chinese minister of foreign trade and economic cooperation, said Thursday in Los Cabos.

In response to a question about the increase of China's exports to Mexico at a joint press conference of ministers and officials of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), Shi said, "The trend of economic and trade liberalization is irresistible in today's world."

He expressed his hope and belief that Mexico takes a positive attitude toward commodities from China.

The trade volume between China and Mexico in the first nine months of this year stood at 2.8 billion US dollars, higher than the same period of last year. Meanwhile, some 50 Chinese companies have invested in Mexico, said the minister.

At the press conference following a two-day APEC ministerial meeting, Shi affirmed that trade and investment, a two-way and mutually beneficial business, is helpful to both sides in economic development.

He said he has reached consensus with Mexican Secretary of Economy Derbez Bautista on the establishment of a strategic alliance between the two countries, in a bid to turn competition into cooperation for common growth.

Answering a question about anti-dumping, Shi stressed that the abuse of protectionist measures such as anti-dumping and anti-subsidizing is blocking the process of trade liberalization.

He said China is willing to work together with other APEC members to contain protectionism and facilitate the establishment of a fair and reasonable world economic order.

Also on Thursday, the Chinese minister met with Jim Sutton, New Zealand's minister for agriculture, biosecurity, forestry and trade negotiations.
