Damming on Diversion Channel of Three Gorges Power Project Proceeds Smoothly
Construction workers are progressing steadily in damming the diversion channel of the Three Gorges Power Project, a crucial phase in the construction of the giant project.

Through painstaking efforts, by 8:00 pm Sunday, the workers had nearly dammed the upstream cofferdam, leaving an opening about 150 meters in width, according to sources from the construction side of the project, in central China's Hubei province.

The damming of the diversion channel, which began on Oct. 25, is essential to establishing a huge dam at the Three Gorges on the Yangtze River, the longest in China.

The timing of the damming work still depends on the water conditions in the river, despite the fact that thus far, the work has progressed smoothly, said an official with the Gezhouba Group, the contractor and materials supplier for the project.

Stricter limits have been placed on transportation and navigation in the diversion channel and many boats are required to pass through the temporary ship lock, according to local officials.
