Iraq and Iran on Tuesday exchanged the remains of 304 soldiers who had been killed during their bloody eight-year war in the 1980s, the official Iraqi News Agency reported.
At Al-Shilamja border area in its southern province of Basrah, Iraq received 70 remains from Iran while handing over 234 remains to Iran.
A funeral procession was held on the Iraqi side, which was attended by many local people.
The last exchange of remains took place on Sept. 17 when the twoneighboring countries swapped the remains of 121 soldiers killed inthe 1980-1988 war, during which over one million people were killedfrom both sides.
More than 13 years after their ceasefire, the two neighbors haveneither normalized their relations nor signed a peace treaty. Thorny issues, such as the returning of the prisoners of war and refugees, have yet to be resolved.
Iraqi Foreign Minister Naji Sabri visited Iran in January tryingto settle the outstanding "humanitarian" issues and normalizing bilateral relations.
