China, the world table tennis powerhouse, need a rude awakening if they are to keeptheir dominance in the next Olympics, head coach Cai Zhenhua said here on Tuesday.
The Chinese team firstly need to make a self-examination in team managements as well as training supervising, said Cai here ina news conference for the upcoming Chinese domestic table tennis Super-star tournament.
Chinese paddlers, who had swept all the golds in the last two Olympics and also last year's world championships, suffered their Waterloo at the 14th Asian Games, which ended in South Korean portcity of Busan on October 14.
"I think the team management now is the biggest problem for China to think over. Our paddlers faced more and more competitions, which made it difficult to monitor the team management," said Cai.
"Also, we still need to focus on training, to improve our training qualities in both spirit and techniques. We cannot improve without tough training as well as technical renovations.
China, winners of six golds in the Bangkok Asiad, lost women's team and all three doubles titles for men, women and mixed in Busan, which hit the worst record in Asiad.
"Besides, I think our players, especially those star paddlers, should cope well with the relationship between glories and profits. We have to fight hard to defend our national glory," added Cai.
The domestic tournament, which features all the participants from Busan, will kick off in November in Guangdong Province.
