Western-based media outlets are to be "accurate and objective" in the way they present Chechen developments to their readers and audiences, called President Vladimir Putin as he was addressing a news conference after a meeting with George Robertson, NATO Secretary General.

"I am hard put watching the European television in all languages, but I often watch the German TV," remarked the President, who is known for fluent German.

As he heard in a news update a few days ago, no improvement has come to Chechnya as yet. The republic lies in ruins, there is no restoration work underway, and no money is coming from Moscow. "That was a blatant lie!" said Mr. Putin. As it really is, many schools, kindergartens and colleges have re-opened in Chechnya. Pensions and wages are being paid, and 700 million euros has been recently transferred to rehabilitate the republic.
