China remains strongly opposed to the proliferation of any form of weapons of mass destruction despite its refusal to sign the International Code of Conduct against ballistic missile proliferation.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan made the remarks when asked to comment on the issue at a regular press conference Tuesday.

Kong said China supports the principles enshrined in the Code on the prevention of proliferation of ballistic missiles, adding that China had participated fully in the consultations on the Code and made rational proposals for its text.

The exclusion of China's proposals from the final text of the Code had rendered it impossible for China to sign the Code, Kong said.

This will not affect China's continuous adherence to its firm position on opposing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction of any form, said Kong, stressing that China will not support, encourage or engage in providing weapons of mass destruction to any country.
