English league second division side Cardiff City confirmed Tuesday the signing of China's World Cup defender Fan Zhiyi subject to a medical and work visa clearance.

According to reports from Cardiff, Wales, 32-year-old Fan, who was voted Asian Player of the Year in 2001, came to the notice of Cardiff after refusing to sign an extended contract with Dundee after this summer's World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

"I wanted to join Cardiff because I think they can reach the Premier League," Fan told the Welsh Western Mail newspaper.

Fan left Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua for English First Division side Crystal Palace in 1998 before moving to Scottish Premier League side Dundee.

Fan, who has won 107 caps for China, has agreed personal terms and will start training with Cardiff immediately.

Cardiff currently finishes third in the second division.
