Russia Calls for Comprehensive Settlement of Iraqi Issue

Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov on Wednesday evening called for a comprehensive settlement of the Iraqi issue, if Iraq fulfills UN Security Council resolution 1441.

Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov on Wednesday evening called for a comprehensive settlement of the Iraqi issue, if Iraq fulfills UN Security Council resolution 1441.

"The implementation of resolution 1441 in full should lead to acomprehensive settlement of the situation surrounding Iraq, including lifting sanctions in strict compliance with Security Council resolutions," Ivanov said in a telephone interview with a Russian television.

Iraq's ruling Revolutionary Command Council on Wednesday agreedto accept United Nations Security Council resolution 1441 providing for disarming the country of weapons of mass destruction,Iraq's state-run television reported.

Iraqi Ambassador Mohammed Al-Douri told reporters at the UN headquarters in New York that Iraq is "clean" of weapons of mass destruction and is ready to readmit inspectors.

Ivanov said that Moscow hails the Iraqi leadership's decision.

"This decision is paving the way for a political settlement," he stressed.

Ivanov said that chief weapons inspector Hans Blix is ready to leave for Iraq on November 18 and will be accompanied by a group of officials to prepare for full-scale international inspection inthe country.

Ivanov also urged the weapons inspectors to start their work inIraq as soon as possible.

Earlier, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Fedotov, Russia'smain spokesman on Iraq, said if Iraq meets all the requirements contained in resolution 1441, Russia will raise the issue of suspending the sanctions against the Arab country.
