Kuchma Sees Bright Future for Ukraine-China Cooperation

Visiting Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma said in Beijing on Monday he believed cooperation between Ukraine and China had a bright future.

Visiting Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma said in Beijing on Monday he believed cooperation between Ukraine and China had a bright future.

At a Chinese-Ukrainian business meeting, Kuchma said he hoped the two countries would widen their cooperation on the basis of mutual trust.

Kuchma said he was impressed by the surprising and unprecedented changes in China since his last visit in 1995.

Ukraine and China enjoyed considerable mutual trust and had made great progress in cooperation, which should be broadened to cover more fields, he said.

Zhong Min, vice-president of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), said China and Ukraine shared a traditional friendship and level of cooperation and had made great progress in trade and economic cooperation in recent years.

Though cooperation was still limited, Zhong said, the two countries were complementary in many respects. For example, Ukraine had advantages in machinery, aviation, chemical and enery industries; while China had a competitive edge in information technology, the manufacturing of household appliances and light industry.

As a result the two nations could cooperate to their mutual benefit in those fields, Zhong said.

Bilateral trade reached 939 million US dollars in the first nine months of this year, a year-on-year rise of 43.9 percent, according to Chinese customs figures.
