Premier Zhu Speaks Highly of HKSAR Gov't Operation

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji spoke highly of the operation of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) government Tuesday while meeting with HKSAR Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa.

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji spoke highly of the operation of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) government Tuesday while meeting with HKSAR Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa.

Zhu Rongji said that Tung, who is serving his second term as chief executive of the HKSAR, and his government have made great efforts to overcome Hong Kong's economic difficulties and reduce people's burdens.

Zhu pledged that the Chinese Central Government will, as always,fully support the SAR government led by Tung in governance according to law.

He said he hoped the SAR government will calmly cope with the existing difficulties and problems, and steadfastly safeguard HongKong's economic and financial stability and social stability.

The premier expressed his belief that as long as the SAR government and people from all walks of life bring into full play and build up Hong Kong's advantages, enhance their confidence and work hard, Hong Kong will surely enjoy more promising prospects.

Tung briefed Premier Zhu on Hong Kong's current social and economic development and the work of the SAR government.

Zhu Rongji also met with leading officials of central government institutions and heads of some mainland-funded enterprises in Hong Kong Tuesday.

Zhu thanked those officials and heads for their work to implement the "one country, two systems" principle and to maintainthe prosperity and stability of Hong Kong.

The premier required them to earnestly study, strictly discipline themselves and contribute more to the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong.

Zhu said people who serve in the Hong Kong-based central government institutions and mainland-funded enterprises in Hong Kong must treasure their opportunity of working in Hong Kong.

As Hong Kong has a well developed market, they should learn to work in the market economy of Hong Kong, he added.

People who work in Hong Kong must carry out the central government's principles and policies to the letter, fulfill their duties and act prudently when faced with complicated situations, he said.

Zhu also asked them to take into account the interests of the country and the people, support the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government led by Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa, and make new contributions to the social stability and economic growth of Hong Kong.
