Intn'l Support for Peace in Sri Lanka to Highlight Oslo Meeting
Sri Lanka will seek international support for the Norwegian-brokered peace process in the country more than just financial help at the donor conference to be held in Oslo next Monday, Constitutional Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris said on Thursday.
Sri Lanka will seek international support for the Norwegian-brokered peace process in the country more than just financial help at the donor conference to be held in Oslo next Monday, Constitutional Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris said on Thursday.
Peiris said that the main objective of this conference is to send a powerful political message to the international community for the support of the peace process in the country.
"One the other hand, the objective of this occasion is significantly different. We are looking for seed money, a moderatequantum of money to begin very urgent humanitarian and rehabilitation work." he told reporters.
Peiris said that the government will use Oslo donor conference as a start to seek much more funds in a donor meeting to be held in Tokyo in five or six months time.
The Oslo meeting will be attended by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Tamil Tiger rebels chief negotiator Anton Balasingham as well as high-ranking officials from the United States and Britain.
Peiris said that the issues concerning the north and east in the country, where the Tamil rebels have been fighting for independence since 1983, will also be discussed at the meeting.
The government has estimated that 500 million US dollars is needed for the reconstruction of the war-battered north and east of the country.
