Russia, Jordan Leaders Discuss Iraq, Middle East Issues

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Jordanian King Abdullah II on Tuesday pledged their commitment to UN resolutions that ensured the return of international weapons inspectors to Iraq.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Jordanian King Abdullah II on Tuesday pledged their commitment to UN resolutions that ensured the return of international weapons inspectors to Iraq.

Both Russia and Jordan stood for Iraq's full compliance with the UN Security Council Resolution 1441, as they believed that stability in the region was possible only on the condition of observing this and other relevant UN resolutions, Foreign MinisterIgor Ivanov told reporters after Putin and Abdullah's meeting.

Along with the situation in Iraq, the two leaders also discussed the Middle East crisis and bilateral ties.

According to the Interfax news agency, Abdullah said Jordan andits neighbors "highly appreciated Russia's leading role" in the Middle East. "Middle East countries see Russia's intentions as a call to resort to common sense," the king was quoted as saying.

As to bilateral cooperation, Putin said he was pleased with theexpanding relationship between Russia and Jordan and hoped furthercooperation in the military-technical sphere.

It was Abdullah's fourth trip to Russia since his ascending thethrone in February 1999.
