The Internet users in China reached 58 million by the end of the year, next only to the US in the world. In the meantime, the framework of the net-users is tending to be more optimized with fee-paying net-users to appear for the first time this year.

As indicated in a statistic report issued at the UN Trade Development Conference last November the global net-users have reached 655 million by the end of the year 2002, of which the number of the Chinese users take up the second in the world, next to the US only. According to the latest forecast by the CNNIC, the Chinese net-loggers had already reached 58 million up to Oct 31, 2002, an increase of 28.7 million heads, a rise of 49.5 percent.

So far the net-users are mostly the male, of whom the main forces are the young people under 35 years old and the unmarried, the majority being the university undergraduates and those of low income, students, persons with more expertise than other trades. With the framework of the net-users tending to be more optimized, the IT business, education and institutions are no longer the trades seeing a concentration of net-users.

This year sees the Chinese net-users tend to be more reasonable in logging onto the net with the fee-paying users to appear for the first time. The significant change among the net-users in 2002 is the appearance of the fee-paying net-users, from the users paying low fee to the co-existence of the users paying low and high at the same time with those paying high to expand in number day by day as seen in present days. The paid mailbox, charged homepage, network games, online short news and download of bell-ringing from the net have become a form of net-consumption, a big bunch of paid-for high quality services.

As learned, starting from the first half of this year the charged mailbox has won popular support. It is learned that on Mar.10, 2002, almost 20 million fee-free mailbox of 263 website were brought to an end for free of charge service and two months afterwards the website saw 590,000 users become its paying clients, including 490,000 individuals and 100,000 enterprises.

The appearance and increase of paying customers have fully explained that the acceptance of information service by net-users has already crossed over the initial stage of "price sensitiveness" to enter the medium and higher stage of "quality sensitiveness". The price has become the criterion differentiating the high-quality and low-quality services.

Besides, according to the survey by CNNIC, amongst the Chinese net-users the proportion of those aiming mainly at acquiring information is on the rise as against the same period of last year. It sees an increase from 42.9 to 47.6 percent, a rise of almost 5 percentage points.
