China is emerging as the world leading mobile phone market with more than 200 million users, the Economic Information Daily reported Saturday.
The country's annual output value gained from the mobile telecommunication industry tops 200 billion yuan (24 billion US dollars), outstripping that of the United States.
Official forecast shows the number of mobile phone subscribers in China is expected to grow by 13-20 percent in the next three years to reach 300 million by 2005.
To cope with the growing demand, the Chinese telecom departments are speeding up the development of 3G (third generation) mobile standard such as TD-SCDMA and WCDMA.
Experiments on the 3G system are expected to be completed by the end of this year and commercial operation to begin in 2003, the paper quoted You Xiaohu, an expert in charge of the telecommunications sector of China's High and New Technology Research and Development Program (program 863) as saying.
He predicted that the market value of the 3G system will come to one trillion yuan by 2010.
China has also placed the development of G4 on the agenda of its program 863.
