Two people were killed and 14 injured on Thursday when a Brazilian Air Force propeller plane carrying military personnel and relatives crashed two miles (3.5 km) short of the runway during an emergency landing.
"The pilot detected engine failure and tried to make an emergency landing at the Afonso Pena (International Airport) but didn't make it," said a spokeswoman for the Infraero airport authority.
The plane, about halfway through its flight to the southern city of Porto Alegre from Sao Paulo state, was carrying five military personnel and 11 civilians, including two children, the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) said.
One woman, the pilot's wife, and the co-pilot were killed in the crash, an Air Force spokesman said. The pilot escaped with minor wounds.
The plane was built by Brazil's Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica, the world's fourth-largest manufacturer of civilian aircraft.
