France will not join military operations on Iraq without United Nations' authorization, French Defense Minister Michele Alliot-Marie said Sunday.

"The war is always the worst solution, all must be done to avoid it. Firstly, we should bring Iraq to respect UN decisions and eliminate weapons of mass destruction," said Alliot-Marie during an interview with French newspaper Parisien-Dimanche.

"Actually, we are always ready to intervene if our interests or engagements are at stake...and if political decisions are taken," she said, reaffirming that France disposes of the means to join military operations.

France has tried to send the message to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein through several heads of Arab states who are on contact with him, she added.

"In parallel, we also send messages to (U.S. President) George W. Bush that the war will cause destabilization of the whole region and risks a bigger wave of terrorism," said the French minister.
