Yao, Williams Named NBA Rookie of Month

The top two picks in the 2002 NBA draft, Houston Rockets center Yao Ming and Chicago Bulls guardJay Williams, on Thursday were named Rookies of the Month of December in 2002.

The top two picks in the 2002 NBA draft, Houston Rockets center Yao Ming and Chicago Bulls guard Jay Williams, on Thursday were named Rookies of the Month of December in 2002.

The top overall pick, the 7-5 Yao apparently averaged 17.1 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.73 blocks in recent 15 games.

After a slow start, Yao is ranked second with .571 field-goal percentage, averaging 13.2 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in the season.

Williams, the second overall pick, averaged 11.6 points, 6.3 assists and 1.67 steals. His assist average is best among first-year players.

Other candidates included Carlos Boozer and Dajuan Wagner of Cleveland, Caron Butler of Miami, Drew Gooden of Memphis and Amare Stoudemire of Phoenix. Butler and Gooden won the glory in November.
