Peru and China have signed a phyto-quarantine cooperation agreement, the National Direction for the Development of Foreign Trade (DINADECE) of the Peruvian Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry announced on Monday.
The deal was signed in the Chinese capital of Beijing by Chinese Vice Minister of Agriculture Liu Jian and Peruvian ambassador to China Luis Chang.
It included the legal framework, a previous investigation and the evaluation made by the State Quality and Quarantine Administration of China, authorizing the entry of fruit and vegetables from Peru into the Chinese market.
A DINADECE spokesman indicated that the agreement was forged in response to a proposal put forward by the Commission of Agri-Industrial Product Exporting, headed by the Peruvian ministers of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Agriculture and Foreign Affairs.
Peru ranks trade in fresh vegetables as one of its fastest growing export sectors in 2002, through the establishment of export consortia.
