Britain on Tuesday announced it will deploy a task force consisting of Royal Navy vessels and 3,000 marine commandos to the Gulf region, calling on 1,500 reservists to prepare for possible Iraqi war.

In an announcement to the House of Commons, Hoon told the lawmakers that plans to call up more reserve soldiers and deploy extra vessels were likely to follow in the coming weeks.

"We want Saddam Hussein to disarm voluntarily, it is evident that we will not achieve this unless we continue to present him with a clear and credible threat of force," Hoon said.

Earlier reports said the British naval force to be deployed includes six Royal Navy vessels comprising aircraft carrier Ark Royal, a submarine, a frigate, a destroyer and two support vessels, which were set to start for Gulf on Saturday.
