British Defense Secretary Geoff Hoonon Tuesday called on reservists to prepare for possible Iraqi war.

In an announcement to the House of Commons, Hoon told the lawmakers, "I have today made an order ... to enable the callout of reservists for possible actions against Iraq."

It would be "misleading as well as undesirable" to reveal the number of reserve troops being activated, Hoon said, adding that the government was initially calling up 1,500 soldiers.

The announcement was made just ahead of British Prime MinisterTony Blair's closing speech on a two-day conference which has drawn together 150 British ambassadors and other senior diplomats.

Reports said Blair was expected to warn the danger of failing to tackle Iraq's weapons of mass destruction in his speech.
