Egypt, Saudi Arabia to Seek Peaceful Solution to Iraqi Crisis

Egypt and Saudi Arabia, two heavy weights in the Middle East, will work to seek a peaceful solution to the Iraqi crisis, the Egyptian ambassador to the kingdom said on Monday.

Egypt and Saudi Arabia, two heavy weights in the Middle East, will work to seek a peaceful solution to the Iraqi crisis, the Egyptian ambassador to the kingdom said on Monday.

"President Hosni Mubarak's upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia asserts Arab efforts to seek a solution to the Iraqi problem and prevent a war in the region," Mohammad Khalil told Egypt's official MENA news agency in the Saudi capital of Riyadh.

"The visit comes at a time when there are difficult conditions in the region, particularly a threat of war to Iraq and developments in the Palestinian lands," Khalil said.

Mubarak is expected to kick off a short visit to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday for talks with Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah Ibn Abdul-Aziz on the volatile Mideast situation, especially the Iraqi crisis.

Addressing a group of Arab intellectuals in Riyadh on Sunday, the crown prince said he was convinced there would be no war on Iraq.

"We are seeing fleets and concentrations (of troops) in the region, but God is inspiring me and gives me the feeling that there will be no such a war," he said.

"This is my conviction and my personal point of view," he said.

There are more than 50,000 US troops already deployed in the Gulf region. The United States plans to double the figure in the coming weeks.

Egypt and Saudi Arabia, two US allies in the region, fear that any war on Iraq would further destabilize the volatile regional situation.
