South Korean Supreme Court ordered anationwide recount of last December's presidential election ballots on Wednesday upon the request of the opposition Grand National Party (GNP), local newspaper JoongAng Daily reported on Thursday.
Roh Moo-hyun, the candidate of the pro-government Millennium Democratic Party (MDP) defeated Lee Hoi-chang, the candidate of the GNP in the close race by gaining 12,014,277 votes or 48.9 percent to 11,443,279 votes or 46.6 percent of the ballots.
A total of 10 million ballots in 80 election districts in the country will be recounted before February, a court official was quoted by the paper as saying.
The GNP, who holds majority in the National Assembly, filed a suit to the Supreme Court against the National Election Commission(NEC) on Dec. 23, 2002, claiming vote counting was not accurate due to mechanical problems with the automatic counting systems.
The biggest opposition said at that time it "accepts the authority and the status of President-elect", but "we want to clear up nationwide suspicions of errors and irregularities."
