Eastern Fujian province has announced plans to invest 1.55 billion yuan (about 190 million US dollars) in a wind power generation project, according to a leading local electric power company.

Senior managers with the Fujian Provincial Power Company, the province's dominant power firm, said recently that an initial feasibility study and proposals have been completed for the project, which involves a total investment of 1.55 billion yuan (190 million US dollars).

The managers said that the company has engaged in technical cooperation with firms from overseas to produce the large power-generating units for the project.

With the Taiwan Straits off its 3,051 km coastline, the province boasts abundant wind power.

Total potential wind power on the territory of Fujian is estimated at 10 million kilowatts, while offshore wind power is about three to four times that figure.

Experts say the project is prominent in that it reduces pollution while increasing power supply.

The province, largely dependent on imported coal and troubled by acid rain as a result, has mapped out a plan to tap renewable energy, including wind power, during the coming decade.

The plan calls for wind-generated power plants with a combined designed generating capacity of 200,000 kilowatts to be built during the five-year period from 2001 to 2005.
