Norway has appointed a new head ofthe Sri Lanka ceasefire monitoring mission, according to the Norwegian Embassy here.
Retired Norwegian Army Major General Trond Furuhovde, who has headed the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) since last February, will hand over his position to another retired army general, Tryggve Tellefsen, the Norwegian Embassy said in a statement available on Saturday.
The monitoring mission is responsible for the supervision of the implementation of a ceasefire agreement signed by the Sri Lankan government and separatist Tamil Tiger rebels last February.
"Mr. Tellefsen will arrive in Sri Lanka in late February or early March 2003, and there will be a brief period of transition before Mr. Furuhovde's departure," the statement said.
However, Furuhovde, who has made an "outstanding contribution"to the establishment of the SLMM after the February ceasefire agreement, will remain available to advise Norway on matters relating to the peace process, the statement said.
Tellefsen has broad experience from the Royal Norwegian Army and many years of distinguished service in peacekeeping operations,it said.
During his career in the Royal Norwegian Army, Tellefsen commanded a multinational peacekeeping and observer force monitoring Egypt and Israel from 1997 to 2001. He also commanded UN peacekeeping forces in Macedonia between 1994 and 1995 and was responsible for recruiting and training Norwegian peacekeepers from 1989 to 1994.
