Face-to-face negotiations between the United States and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on an equal basis is the fairest way to resolve the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Wednesday, quoting a senior DPRK official.

The KCNA said Kim Rong Sun, secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, made the remarks during his secondmeeting with South Korean special envoy Lim Dong-won here.

During the meeting, the DPRK representative called on South Korea to cooperate closely to hold back the war threat and maintain peace given the present tense situation on the Korean Peninsula, the report said.

No matter how the situation changes, the inter-Korean cooperation will develop under the North-South Joint Declaration signed by DPRK leader Kim Jong-il and South Korean President Kim Dae-jung in 2000, the DPRK side was quoted as saying.

Lim arrived here and had his first meeting with Kim Rong Sun onMonday.

He was expected to deliver a personal letter from Kim Dae Jung to Kim Jong-il, in which the South Korean president is expected tocall on the DPRK to take substantive measures to defuse the nuclear crisis.

Lim has already met Kim Yong Nam, president of the DPRK SupremePeople's Assembly. But whether he will have a chance of meeting Kim Jong-il is still not clear.
