Director of the European Space Agency (ESA) Valeriano Claros said on Saturday that it will continue the cooperation programs with its U.S. counterpart, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

In a statement to the press, Claros said the breakup of US spacecraft Columbia "is a tragedy that has an impact on all of us who work in spatial research."

However, Claros assured that the accident "should not have any effect" on the underway spatial programs.

It will be known in the coming weeks that what NASA will do with its flights and whether the scheduled flights with the participation of European astronauts will be delayed, he said.

He added "it is foreseeable" that NASA will undertake "an important check up of every flight parameter" to assess whether a modification should be made to prevent an accident similar to thatof Columbia.

Claros pointed out the trip of Spaniard Pedro Duque to the station set for next April will be on a Russian craft.

Space shuttle Columbia disintegrated on Saturday with seven astronauts on board just 16 minutes before landing at Florida in the southeastern United States.
