Iran Expresses 'Regret' over Loss of Space Shuttle Columbia

Iran expressed "regret" over the loss of space shuttle Columbia and its seven crew members after it brokeapart during re-entry, the official news agency IRNA said Sunday.

Iran expressed "regret" over the loss of space shuttle Columbia and its seven crew members after it brokeapart during re-entry, the official news agency IRNA said Sunday.

"Iran distinguishes political row and scientific, humanitarian issues between Iran and the US," Iranian Foreign Ministry SpokesmanHamid Reza Asefi was quoted as saying hours after the tragedy Saturday night.

The spokesman also expressed the hope that "such unfortunate events will not deter scientific centers from their attempts to explore the undiscovered secrets of the creation."

The space shuttle appeared to disintegrate over Texas after it lost contact with NASA minutes before its scheduled landing.

The seven crew members included Israel's first astronaut and thefirst Indian-born woman in space.
