China maintains that parties concerned should consult with the Cambodian government based on previous talks and relevant resolutions in order to reach an agreement on trying former Khmer Rouge leaders.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue made the remarks here Sunday when asked to comment on the failure to reach an agreement on the matter during the New York meetings between Cambodia and the United Nations.

The Cambodian government has decided to establish a special court within its judicial system to deal with the prosecution of crimes committed during the Democratic Kampuchea period, and has asked for assistance from the international community, a move welcomed by resolution 57/228 of the UN General Assembly.

China holds that Cambodia's stance should be understood and respected, Zhang said.
