The latest United Nations Security Council meeting on Friday increased the chances of resolving the Iraqi crisis peacefully, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Fedotov said on Saturday.

"The main conclusion is that there are no grounds for using force against Iraq at present. Actually, there are possibilities of resolving the Iraq problem via inspections conducted in strict compliance with UN Security Council resolutions," Fedotov told the Inter fax news agency.

"It is necessary to continue working for a political settlement of the Iraq problem," he said, adding that most UN countries share this position.

However, he did not rule out the possibility of using force in disarming Iraq.

"The use of force is always in the UN Security Council's arsenal in line with the UN's charter," said the diplomat.

It was the second time that Fedotov had commented on the Iraq issue after Chairman of UN Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) Hans Blix and Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mohamed ElBaradei presented reports on Friday to a crucial Security Council meeting on arms inspections in Iraq and Iraqi cooperation.

"The reports made by Hans Blix and Mohamed ElBaradei were, on the whole, positive," he said.

He also hailed Iraq's increased cooperation with UN inspectors and urged Iraq to continue active cooperation with them.
