An Iraqi diplomat has been ordered to leave Australia for spying, Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer announced Saturday.

According to the Australian Associated Press, the foreign minister said Helal Ibrahim Aaref was told Friday he was being expelled and had until Wednesday to leave.

"The assessment is he is an Iraqi intelligence officer and clearly that has implications for Australian security," Downer told reporters in Adelaide, the capital of South Australia.

He refused to release details.
