Sources say registration for .cn second-level domain names will be opened to the public on March 17. According to experts' estimation, this measure will cause the number of the .cn domain name registration to top 250,000.

Domain name, a house number plate on the Internet, refers to the character indication of hierarchical structure used to identify and position a computer on the Internet. Take www.mii.gov.cn for instance. Of which "cn" is the top-level domain name, while the "gov" is the second-level domain name, and so on and so forth. "Cn" is the top-level domain name under China's own administration. Its registration is to register the Internet domain name under the .cn domain name, such as abc.com.cn, this new measure is to allow companies and organizations to register second-level domain names under the .cn top-level domain name, such as abc.cn.

An official with the Ministry of Information Industry noted that, to safeguard national and public interests, the ministry has adopted systematic protective measures including registration banning, restriction, preference and upgrading, and taken a series of steps and set the time limits for policy announcement, priority application and concentrated handling, in a bid to protect the interests of state organs, name brands, world cultural & natural heritages, institutions of higher learning, news media and China's original third-level domain names holders. So far, the work to offer .cn second-level domain names has been proceeding in a steady and orderly way.

The work related to the priority registration of the second-level domain names and upgrade of the former third-level domain names had ended late last month, with the number of the former reaching 5,857 and the latter 65,346 respectively.

The new policy concerning domain names administration has yielded initial success.
