Chinese Vice-President Zeng Qinghong extended holiday greetings to China's working class in all social circles on the eve of International Labor Day on May 1.

Zeng made his regards during a meeting with the country's honored individuals and model workers held on Tuesday.

He first praised front-line medical staff for their efforts and bravery in combating severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

He said the central government had taken the prevention and treatment of SARS as a significant political task, since it was closely related to the people's health and security, and even to the stability of China's reform and development as well as the national interest and its international reputation.

Zeng stressed that nothing, including SARS, could hinder the nation's modernization and progress towards the kind of affluent society proposed in the 16th Party Congress.

He also emphasized the importance of the great historical role played by the Chinese working class.

The Chinese working class had always been the main driver advancing economic development, social and historical progress, and was the main force for socialist construction.

"Wholehearted reliance on the working class is the fundamental guideline of our Party," Zeng noted.

Since the policies of reform and opening up, the Chinese working class had experienced great and deep changes, which further consolidated and strengthened its representation of advanced productive forces.

With the progress of socialist modernization and industrialization as well as revolutionary innovations in science and technologies, the working class in China had expanded into an integration of industrial workers, other workers, intellectuals and various managers, which was classified into all types of professional workers and manual laborers working in enterprises, institutions and government organs.

However, Zeng also pointed out that the Chinese working class was also facing new historical tests, such as the strategic adjustment of economic structures, reform and reorganization of state-owned enterprises as well as re-employment of laid off workers.

He encouraged the laid-offs to seek new jobs or to start their own businesses, which would be a display of their firm will to conquer difficulties and their courage in creating new beginnings.

While referring to the realization of an affluent and well-rounded society, he said it would not only rely on the working class, but also benefit it by reflecting common wishes and basic interests.

Zeng called on the Chinese working class to follow the guidelines of the Communist Party of China and support policies and measures taken by the country and the Party. He also encouraged people to study hard to improve themselves.
