Liu Qi, secretary of the municipal committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), has called for greater efforts by grassroots units to seal off the epidemic routes of SARS.

Liu, who is also member of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, spoke during an inspection of local departments to check for flaws in their anti-SARS work.

He praised Haidian District for its practice of appointing a medical supervisor in all the 33 communities and townships to monitor the efforts of quarantining people who are suspected of carrying the SARS virus.

SARS patients, non-SARS patients who have a fever, and other patients, should use separate hospitals, he said.

Meanwhile, a local official said so far there were no reports of any SARS cases among the city's prison population.

Zhu Jianhua, director of the municipal administration of prisons, said all local jails had been sealed off since April 24 and no family members were allowed to visit inmates.
