Chinese Girl Wins Piano Contest in Ukraine

Zhang Weiqing, an 11-year-old girl from China's Hong Kong, has won the first prize in the under-15 category of a youth piano contest held in the Ukrainian capital.

Zhang Weiqing, an 11-year-old girl from China's Hong Kong, has won the first prize in the under-15 category of a youth piano contest held in the Ukrainian capital.

At the fifth Gorovits youth piano contest, which started on April 17 and concluded on Saturday, Zhang was awarded not only theGolden prize, but also a special prize for best collaboration withthe orchestra.

In the U-15 category, Bao Tianbao, a Chinese Japanese, who is studying in the affiliated high school of the Tianjin Conservatoryin northern China, won the second prize along with a Serbian contestant. Another girl from China, 11-year-old He Zhenzhen, was in joint third place, who was also awarded the prize for best performance of a work by Ukrainian composers.

In the U-19 category, China's Zhang Hai'ou finished in joint second place, and compatriot Qian Cheng in joint third place. The first prize was won by a local girl.

A Belarussian won the second prize in the U-35 contest, in which no first prize was awarded.

The awarding ceremony was held on Saturday night.

The piano contest, sponsored by the Ukrainian Culture Ministry and the Kiev municipal government, is held every two years. This year's competition drew 82 contestants from 17 countries, including Australia, China, Japan, Russia, South Korea, and the United States.
