Powell Sends Condolences to Chinese FM on Submarine Mishap

US Secretary of State Collin Powell Tuesday sent condolences to Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing over the recent naval submarine mishap in China.

US Secretary of State Collin Powell Tuesday sent condolences to Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing over the recent naval submarine mishap in China.

In the message, Powell expressed his deep condolences at the death of Chinese Navy sailors in the mishap and extended his "heartfelt sympathies to the families and friends of those brave submariners," saying "our thoughts and prayers are with the Chinese people on this sad day."

Some 70 Chinese Navy sailors aboard the conventionally powered No. 361 submarine were killed in a recent accident near the Neichangshan islands off eastern Shandong Province.
